David Icke promoted the 5G-as-weapon claim heavily from 2018 onward, arguing the millimeter-wave frequencies used in 5G fixed-wireless are a directed energy weapon disguised as communications infrastructure. The theory intensified after the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, which had been an early 5G deployment city.

Icke's 5G claims contributed to a wave of arson attacks on cell towers in the UK, Netherlands, Ireland, and Canada in April-May 2020. Mainstream physics holds that 5G frequencies (sub-6 GHz and 24-40 GHz mmWave) are non-ionizing and below ICNIRP exposure limits.

The theory has roots in older anti-EMF activism dating to the 1990s (electrosensitivity claims) and overlaps with HAARP and chemtrails narratives.
