Cultural Marxism takeover theory
The 'Cultural Marxism' framework traces left-wing influence in American institutions to the Frankfurt School (Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse), Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci's concept of cultural hegemony, and 1960s critical theory. Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA have made the framework central to their campus organizing since the mid-2010s.
Kirk's framing argues critical race theory, gender ideology, DEI corporate training, and ESG investing are coordinated outputs of a long-march-through-the-institutions strategy. Turning Point's Professor Watchlist and School Board Watchlist target specific educators alleged to advance the framework.
Scholars including historian Andrew Hartman and Southern Poverty Law Center have argued the framework recycles 1930s Nazi propaganda about 'cultural Bolshevism' and has antisemitic roots in its original form. Kirk and others argue the contemporary use describes a real ideological alignment without ethnic targeting.
